How To Treat And Prevent Loose Teeth

Teeth can last ages if they are properly taken care of. Unfortunately, through wear and tear teeth can become loosened with age. This can be problematic as it makes using your mouth difficult and quite a painful experience. Fortunately, there are many steps you can take to treat and help prevent your teeth from becoming loose or eventually coming out altogether. Such as...

Gum Cleaning

When your teeth are mobile in your mouth, one of the simplest things to do to alleviate the problem is to get an extensive gum cleaning. Teeth often become mobile due to underlying problems. The most frequent cause is periodontal disease, which affects about half of all adults in the United States. Frequent cleanings and good dental health can help stave off this risk as well as reducing the mobility of already loose teeth within your mouth. This is because a deep cleaning can remove pockets that have developed in your mouth by a bacterial infection.

Night Guards

One of the primary causes of loosening teeth is gritting and grinding your teeth which slowly wiggles them out of position. A night guard is a simple mold placed in your mouth as you go to sleep to keep you from damaging your teeth by grinding while you sleep. Getting a night guard is an excellent preventative measure that is relatively noninvasive.

Splinting

Much like mending a broken bone, splinting a teeth can help the loose tooth from wiggling about. This works as the loose tooth is joined to one of the more stable teeth on the other side of it with a thin steel wire. Splinting, however, generally works best for teeth that are marginally loose and loses its effect on really motile teeth.

Tooth Removal

Unfortunately, sometimes the tooth becomes so loose that the only chance at recourse is to have it removed all together. This is generally only done to teeth which move in all directions in the mouth. Generally, after the tooth is removed you will need to invest in a bridge or other dental implant from a dentist to compensate for the gap in your teeth to prevent other problems.

Occlusal Adjustment

Sometimes, the best way to treat and prevent loosening teeth is to have an occlusal adjustment. The goal of an adjustment is the alter the bite of your mouth to make it to where the teeth have less contact with each other as your jaw closes. This minimizes the stress of pressure on the teeth during a bite which puts you less at risk.

Just remember, you need to act quickly if you suspect that you have loose teeth. This will prevent other problems from arising and will get your mouth back to feeling healthier which will make your life more convenient overall.
