Four Ways To Calm Your Nerves Prior To An Upcoming Dental Appointment

Do you feel nervous or anxious prior to visiting the dentist? You're not alone. For some people, the fear becomes so bad that it is considered a phobia, for which they need to seek treatment from a therapist. If you absolutely cannot make yourself go to the dentist, you may be one of those who need therapy to address your fears. In most cases, however, mild to moderate anxieties and worries can be managed by doing these four things before your appointment. 

1. Let the dentist know you are nervous

There is no shame in being nervous about going to the dentist. So, let your dentist know how you are feeling! Give their office a call, and tell the receptionist that you have some dental anxiety and will be trying to manage it as you visit. He or she can inform the dentist, which will inspire the dentist to move more slowly and explain things as they go. 

2. Distract yourself

It's easy to become too focused on your upcoming dental appointment, to the point that it's all you think about. This only allows your anxiety to grow deeper and deeper. In the days leading up to your appointment, try to distract yourself with another interest or obligation so you simply do not have the time or mental energy to think about going to the dentist. Maybe you can take on some freelance work with a due date the same day as your appointment, or perhaps you want to spend the week re-focusing on your training for a 5k.

3. Practice deep breathing

Deep breathing can instantly help calm your nerves and lower your blood pressure. Practice deep breathing in the days leading up to your appointment so that when the time grows closer, you are adept at using this technique to calm yourself. Breathe in deep to the count of 10, hold your breath for 10 seconds, and then exhale to the count of 10. Repeat at least three times.

4. Stay away from caffeine

Caffeine may help you wake up in the morning, but it also has a tendency to make people more nervous and on edge. If possible, stay away from caffeine the week of your dental appointment. You might have a headache the first day or two, but after that, you will feel calmer and better able to deal with your worries.
